Whenever a surgeon needs to know the exact location of a catheter in the body, they often use X-rays. Repeated X-rays can expose the body to too much radiation that can cause illness. MRIs are safer, but they are huge and impractical. Dr. Saad recognized this problem through his own experience and came up with a solution. He invented an electromagnetic device to locate catheters in the body without any type of machine scan. It uses electromagnetic energy to detect the coil and wires inside the catheter. The device lights up through an output voltage when it is over the catheter. Patients will not need an X-ray or an MRI, but instead just this small device. A Utah medical company is interested in implementing it, despite manufacturers being hesitant.
He also invented an apparatus with suction and irrigation capabilities that can make a doctor’s job much easier and efficient. Endoscopes can help a doctor see what is inside the body without surgery, but liquids can obscure their view by fogging up the lens. Doctors have to suck up the liquid and reinsert the endoscope while trying to remember the exact place he had it. Saad’s invention is being added to endoscopes for bronchoscopy, esophagoscopy, and sigmoidoscopy. It allows doctors to suck up liquid without removing the endoscope, and later wash the area with fluids. Dr. Saad knows first hand that the complications that arise from traditional endoscopes can greatly lengthen a procedure time. Doctors can now focus on the scope without interruption. This invention does not cost much to produce, making it a common tool that doctors use in the modern day. Dr. Saad uses the device himself.
